© 2006 SAGE Publications IntroductionThe 5th World Workshop on Oral Health and Disease in AIDS, which was held in Phuket, Thailand, in July, 2004, follows the previous four successful meetings held in Skukuza, South Africa (2000), London (1996), San Francisco (1993), and San Diego (1988). There were over 150 participants from 27 countries and representatives from all the major groups studying the oral aspects of HIV infection. The program consisted of plenary lectures, posters, and workshops. The breadth of clinical and basic science was reflected by the subdivision of the workshops into those focusing on clinical aspects, those focusing on basic science aspects, and those focusing on a mixture of both, and the translation of basic science to clinical problems. These parallel themes were a feature of all the recent workshops and allowed for excellent interchange with all research aspects and questions being discussed at the plenary sessions. Prior to the Workshop, the international scientific committee and the chairs of each of the eight workshops posed research questions in the relevant areas. As expected, some questions could be answered fully, some questions were answered partially, some questions could not be answered at all, and some questions raised other research issues that need to be addressed. The final sessions of the workshop attempted to identify a research agenda for the future, including those questions which had not been answered and new areas of importance, which the workshop, as a whole, felt were of international importance.
